David
Our photo was taken on a cloudy day, but we’d love it to have a warm, sunset glow! Can you transform it into something romantic and artistic for our album?
Our approach
To meet the client’s needs, we:
- Replaced the pale sky with a breathtaking sunset, ensuring natural light flow and color harmony.
- Applied warm tones and soft gradients to enhance the romantic atmosphere.
- Carefully color-graded the couple’s skin tones to reflect the golden light of sunset.
Rough Patches and Solutions
Overexposed Original Photo – Required precise masking and adjustments to balance the lighting with the sunset.
Matching Shadows & Highlights – Realigned light direction, ensuring a natural transition between the couple and the new background.
Seamless Blending – Enhanced contrast, edge refinement, and subtle glow effects to integrate them flawlessly into the scene.
Album Integration – Designed a dedicated album page to showcase this artistic transformation as a standout piece.

A good photo on a pale day
David and his partner had a photo from their wedding that worked in every way except one. It was shot on a cloudy day. The sky was white and empty, the light was flat and the colours looked cold. They asked whether we could give it a warm sunset glow and turn it into something romantic and artistic for their album.
The first problem: a sky with nothing in it
An overcast sky often comes out overexposed in a photo. That is what happened here: the sky area was close to pure white, with no detail to work with. Replacing it meant precise masking around the couple and everything that touched the sky line. A rough mask shows up as a bright halo around hair and shoulders, which is the most common sign of a sky swap.
Once the masking was right, the new sunset sky went in. Choosing it was not only about looks. The position of the sun in the new sky decides where the light has to come from on the couple.
Moving the light to match the sun
On a cloudy day light comes from everywhere at once. At sunset it comes from one low, warm direction. So the couple had to be relit to match. We worked on the direction of light and shadow so that the side facing the sun is warmer and brighter and the other side falls off naturally. Skin tones were graded towards the golden colour of the hour, carefully, because skin that is pushed too far orange looks like a tan filter, not a sunset.
The final step was the join between the couple and the scene: contrast, edge refinement and a soft glow where the sunlight would wrap around them. Without it, even good light still looks pasted on.
Why a warm filter would not have been enough
The quick option would have been to warm up the whole photo and call it sunset. It doesn't work. A white sky stays white, just yellow. The light on the couple still comes from everywhere, so there are no shadows on the side away from the sun. And a filter warms everything equally, including things that at sunset would stay cool, like the shadows themselves. People may not be able to say what is wrong, but they feel it. That is why this job went through the sky, the masking, the direction of light and the skin tones separately, and only then the overall colour.
Designed for the album
The finished image wasn't just delivered as a file. Because it was made for the album, it got a dedicated page there, designed to show it as a standout piece rather than one photo among many. In David's words, it looks like they had the most magical sunset on their wedding day. That is the point of photo art done well: it doesn't look like an effect, it looks like a memory.
If you want to offer this to a couple
- Choose a photo where the couple is sharp and their outline against the sky is clean. Loose hair against a white sky is possible, but takes more time.
- Tell us how the image will be used: a full album page, a cover, a print on the wall. It affects the composition.
- One or two strong pieces in an album work better than many. A whole album of sunsets loses the effect.
